10/31/2017  Innovation Explorer 2018: Innovation culture, Innovation policie
location: Sofia
contact person Innovation Starter
Innovation State of Mind: Public Policies for Innovation is the theme of the fourth edition of the Innovation Explorer Day forum which will be held on 22.02.2018 at the Sofia Event Center.

Lecturers from Amazon, Google, Facebook, Ocado, Microsoft, Challenge Prize Center, New York University's (NYU) Stern School of Business and others will comment on the role of business in shaping policies for innovation, innovation and smart changes in the environment.

The difference this year is that the forum will be in line with the context of Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2018 and we will look for the "secret ingredient" of the success of the countries known for their progress in innovation.

Opening lecturer of the forum will be Professor Arun Sundararajan, author of the best-selling book “The Sharing Economy”. He is a lecturer at New York University and Stern School of Business, a lecturer at the International Economic Forum, one of the most cited economists in recent years in The New York Times, The Financial Times, The Guardian, Wired, Le Monde, Bloomberg View, Fortune, Entrepreneur, The Economic Times, LiveMint, Harvard Business Review , Knowledge@Wharton and Quartz.

The highlights of the speakers' presentations will be on people's thinking and attitudes and how those change from passive to experimental. Let's see where positive thinking will emerge (Barry Brand, Innovation Director at Saatchi & Saatchi), Technologies for the benefit of people who challenge state regulation (Jim Fanning, Director of Central and Eastern Europe at Amazon Web Services, Gabriela Cech, Director of Public Policies for Central and Eastern Europe at Facebook, Stephanie Fastre, Head of Innovative and Creative Programs for Google Employees), Process automation and innovation as a process (Paul Clarke, Ocado Technology Chief Technology Officer, Matt McBride, SoftServe Vice President, Olivier Usher, director research programs in PrizeCenter) and many more.

The other two "ingredients" of the innovative culture - the massive global thinking and the ambition for change that together with the positive attitude have the power to change the energy of a whole community, will be seen in Dex Torick-Barton's presentations, who is well known by the audience of Innovation Explorer from this year's edition. Barry Brand, Levent Korkmaz and Karina Karagaeva will play with the term "digital happiness."

Guests of the forum will be able to choose from four workshops this year:
• Innovate your mindset, with facilitator Karina Karagaeva
• Inclusive Design, with facilitator Matt McBride
• Strategic Design, with facilitator Levent Korkmaz,
• Winning Potential Investors, with facilitator Hristo Kassovski

The main suggestion of the forum in 2018 will be for a new management of our expectations.
The environment has a great impact on people's behavior and their innovative thinking, and the stimulation of creative thinking, the acceptance of new ideas, even the time spent on innovation, influence the innovation capacity of every person in one country.

Hence, the food elements are not accidental: Food for Thought is our literal and metaphorical message to you: to innovate, we need to think about innovation and live with the attitude of change here and now and in the future. This year we expect over 1200 guests and lecturers from 12 countries.

Innovation Explorer 2018 is organized with the general support of: Unicredit Bulbank, VISA and in cooperation with: Microsoft, Questers, SoftServe, ICAP and others.

More details about Innovation Starter: this is the first Bulgarian innovation agency to implement business, public and educational projects to change the environment and innovation culture in our country. Innovation Starter organizes practical trainings and consultations to introduce marketing students, advertising and business development students, trade companies, non-profit enterprises, state institutions and start-up companies to the principles of: building a long-term culture of innovation; consistent inventive thinking and its methodologies; tools for generating innovative ideas; working with specific cases to innovate and revise products, services and processes; consulting and analysis of a portfolio of products and services, business development; application of the principles of inventive thinking in internet projects.

02/25/2016  BASSCOM is a partner of Innovation Explorer 2016
location: Sofia Tech Park
contact person Innovation Starter

Upcoming is the second edition of the International Forum for innovations - Innovation Explorer Day, which is organized by Capital and Innovation Starter.

In 2016 edition, the Forum will seek for the real face of innovations, as a result of errors, problems, efforts and human needs, not as shiny, glossy, expensive word or product. Therefore, the stories that International Speakers will present, are stories about the long road to innovations through failures and lessons learned from them. The Speakers will also share short stories of innovation: from failure to success, from nobody to hero, from zero to one million. They are created with the kind support of Creative Agency Nitram under the general title "The short story of innovation".

The conference gathers for the second time in Bulgaria, the leading global innovators like Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, Google, McCann, Intel, Flipps, StudySmart, Institute for innovation and change methodologies etc., who will present trends in the key categories of innovation:

- Creativity
- Disruptive Innovation
- Open Innovation
- Development of new products and services
- Social innovation.

The organizers have looked for the successful balance between the experience of Business Consultants in innovations and Entrepreneurs and the Companies names above should not mislead you - the Speakers will speak not only for technological innovations but on the contrary - innovations in processes, services and business models in all industries – the 2016's focus. Therefore the Presenters are again proven names in the Industry, who are visiting Bulgaria for the first time, at our invitation:

- Jurgen Benning from Intel, As. General Council Intel, USA, with more than 25 year career at Intel, who will present the trivia of their Innovations Strategy and Patent Policy;

- Nir Refua by McCann Erickson, Chief Innovation Officer at McCann Europe, Israel, one of the most awarded Creative Directors of festivals such as Cannes Liones and Golden Drum, with impressive projects for social innovation;

- Philip Floetoto from Disney, Senior Software Engineer, USA, unlike last year when Anthony Christov, Art Director at Pixar talked about the way the Company promotes creativity and allows creative freedom for individual design of the workplace, Philip, who is Italian by origin and one of the young talents of the team, will talk about the similarities and differences in the creative processes of Disney and Pixar, and where and how to meet technology and creativity;

- Constantine (Dino) Kiritsis, StudySmart, Founder of Study Smart, Greece, one of the most charismatic speakers on the topic of innovation, who teaches at a number of Universities and is a conceptual author of the mini MBA program at PWC, will speak on the topic innovation management, structure innovations a Company and the types of innovation strategies and policies;

- Kosta Yordanov, who lives and works in San Mateo, founder of Flips - a Company which in 2014 was included in the index of the top 50 technology Companies in the US, will visit Bulgaria to share how the path of errors and experiments is the right path to innovations;

- Anna-Marie Vilamovska, Secretary of Innovation Policies to the office of President of the Republic of Bulgaria, will speak on the topic of the future of innovations in the Public Sphere and innovative clusters.

And because continuity and tradition are the foundation of innovations' culture, there have been invited two of the last year's International Speakers - Felix Von Held (IICM) and Anthony Christov (Pixar) will ensure a smooth transition to the theme of 2016.

Will again include Elvin Guri, Executive Director of the fund for co-financing Empower Capital, who this year will continue the theme of the Design Innovation Culture in Bulgaria.

The Bulgarian ICT Associations with a pressconference regarding “Strategy for e-Government and state budget for 2011”

On October 20th at the Press club of the Bulgarian News Agency was held a press conference on the topic “Strategy for e-Government and state budget for 2011”. The press conference was organized by the main ICT branch organizations in Bulgaria - BAIT, BASSCOM, BWA and Bulgarian ICT Cluster.

The Branch NGOs expressed their concern for the e-Government strategy progress and the road map as of the recent days, as well as for the parameters of the state budget 2011. In this connection, they pointed out 4 main problems and introduced the main moments of the common position regarding the e-Government Strategy.

In order to be achieved a transparent development of the e-Government, the Bulgarian ICT Associations made the following recommendations: there has to be an unconditional political will and clear financial frame for the strategy implementation; realistic and well coordinated projects have to be defined; a common centralized ICT government has to be included; the sector policies have to be brought on a national level; there have to be additional measures for increase of security, trust and usage of e-services; the stable development of the realized e-services has to be guaranteed and a public register for all ICT projects has to be created. In their common position the NGOs stated that they will monitor the execution of the strategy and will give a consultative feedback. They also explained that every year they will public a White book for e-government containing valuation of the progress as well as critics and development suggestions.

More information about the pressconference can be found here (in Bulgarian).

The Bulgarian Software Branch recognizes a growth in the number of working places during 2009

The Bulgarian Association of Software Companies – BASSCOM has presented the result from the second edition of the annual survey called “The Bulgarian IT Industry Barometer” conducted among the Association members.

The software companies in Bulgaria recognize a growth in the number of working places with 8% during 2009, despite the difficult economic conditions –this is what the second edition of the annual survey called “The Bulgarian IT Industry Barometer” conducted among the Association members indicates. The results of the survey have been presented on a press conference today – 30.09.2010, at the Press club of the Bulgarian News Agency (BNA). The software industry strengthens its positions as one of the few Bulgarian industries with high added value and competitiveness in a world range providing exceptional opportunities for professional realization and development of the people working in this field.

According to the Bulgarian IT Industry Barometer the share of export from the total sales of software products retains on around 50% as the share of high added value products raises with 7%.

The survey was conducted online among 57 member companies of BASSCOM and the Bulgarian Web Association (BWA). BWA is a partner in the project. The data collection was done during the period January – April 2010 with the support of GOPA Germany. Among the companies participated in the survey vastly prevail the software products developers and those offering software services.

The data analysis shows that the trend for a change in the profile of the products and services offered on the foreign markets retains in direction towards the offering of high added value solutions and services compared to the traditional outsourcing. Around 50% from the Bulgarian software companies’ sales are from export as this index retains without any change by comparison with the last 2 years.

In 2009 the participated in the survey companies have increased the number of their employees with 8% - this trend shows the responsibility of the software entrepreneurs for the experts working in their companies.

Most of the ICT branch representatives have moderate expectations for the sector recovery during 2010 as almost 70% from the participants expect stagnation or a slow recovery. According to 47% of the participated companies the number of employees will raise with 10% during this year. Another 20% from the firms expect this index to remain the same.

Almost half of the companies completed the questionnaire expect the state policy not to influence their business, whereas 36.7% of the firms believe that it will affect them but in a negative way.

Apart from many other sectors the Bulgarian software industry does not ask for exceptions – lower tax rates, protections, target investments etc. BASSCOM requires things that the whole society needs:

1. Reasonable IT investments which are professionally made and according to commonly approved rules for providing a better government;

2. Working mechanisms for innovation stimulation and acquisition of abilities for new markets’ creation and realization in a global range;

3. Fundamental improvement of the educational system – not only on a university and professional level, but starting from the preschool education – qualitative new learning level and personality formation in the primary and secondary schools. This is the way for acquisition of a world level university education.

BASSCOM is in a constant dialog with its member companies and other representatives of the science industries in order to define in one year the requirements towards the educational system – in the whole spectrum of learning for lifetime.

As a first step and to meet the needs of highly qualified specialists in the field of software engineering, ESI Center Bulgaria, in which BASSCOM is a co-founder, has started a pilot cluster of courses and consequent development of a master program on “Software Engineering and IT management”. The program is oriented towards the demands of the IT industry and is being implemented in partnership with Software Engineering Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, BASSCOM, Bulgarian ICT Cluster and Bulgarian Universities, with the support of United States Agency for International Development and America for Bulgaria Foundation.

The goal of the program is to provide contemporary content and training courses on software engineering and IT services management, with a special focus on modern training methods and style. The cluster of pilot courses will be developed and adopted in partnership with the Software Engineering Institute of Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, USA) – one of the top leaders in computers science and software engineering, the provider of the IT industry quality standards (Capability Maturity Model Integration, CMMI). The program relies on building local capacity by “train-the-trainer” component – qualification of Bulgarian trainers, lead professors and assistants, under the coaching of SEI-CMU and ESI lecturers.

Online encyclopedia for architects was the winner of the NovaTech national round

The winner of this year’s national round of the competition for technological entrepreneurship and innovative business ideas NovaTech, which BASSCOM supports, is the Open Buildings project. “Since the beginning of the year, a team of 20 people part of the company Despark has been working on the project”, said Adel Zakut, CEO of the company. The website exists since July 2010. It is developed on the model of Wikipedia and represents a list of buildings from all around the world – historical, contemporary, conceptual, and provides an easy way for sharing and preserving the architectural knowledge. The reason why the project is searching for an investment is to accelerate the development of the site.

Open Buildings is created by architects and architectural fans disappointed by the lack of classified online data for architecture. The site has two types of target groups – fans (tourists, students etc.) and professionals (companies). The companies can make links between their profiles and the buildings designed by them and thus to advertise themselves.

Open Buildings is an intelligent, filterable directory of buildings, which allows the visitors - fans quickly and easily to find architectural information interesting to them. The content is collected from different online sources: Flickr, YouTube, Vimeo, Amazon and others in order the suggested data base to be enriched. The buildings are shown by different ways – as a grid, a list and a slideshow, as well as on Google maps – every one of which provides a different experience.

The content is also entirely available for fans via iPhone applications – Buildings which can be downloaded for free from Apple App Store already. For five days on the e-market, the application has been downloaded more than 20 000 times.

The second place of the national round of NovaTech was for GNERGY project. It includes software for architects and engineers and aims at facilitating them in the creation, construction and support of green buildings. “The system supports the energy moulding and the simulation of energy processes in a building – from heating and ventilation to regime for the use of the building, people, inner heat sources, climate data from the external environment, used material for isolation etc.”, explained Martin Gogov, the executive partner of GNERGY. After the completion of the simulation, the indexes of the building are formed – how much energy is used, what carbon dioxide emissions are emitted, what is the comfort of the people inside, how efficient is the heating system, the ventilation and climate and how much the adaptation that aims at raising the efficiency of energy of the building would cost.

For the first year, parallel to the traditional Novatech finals an online contest was conducted. This is a special online NovaTech round in each country which hosts the competition and allows one applicant to go to the regional finals in Budapest, Hungary. The first Bulgarian winner of this new round is the project StockPodium. It is developed by the company Imagga. stockpodium.com is a website for searching and finding of pictures with proved copyrights on the basis of visual similarities. The pixel content of every image is analyzed and is described in a specific way on the basis of colors, histogram, location of objects on the picture etc. This enables the comparison of the image with other pictures. Moreover, the search becomes quicker and more intuitional with a combination of a key word.

For the fifth year in a row, the national and regional competition is carried out by the Bulgarian Institute for Management and Technology (BIMT) and is supported by BASSCOM and Gramma Net IS. The jury of this year’s national event were Mr. George Brashnarov, Chairman of BASSCOM and also of the jury, Ms. Reni Pavlova, executive director of BIMT, Mr. Marin Iliev and Ms. Mihaelena Damianova, investment managers of NEVEQ, Mr. Borislav Borislavov, executive partner of The Bulgarian Business Angels Network (BBAN) and Mr. Boyan Bonev, honoured as “The most successful young entrepreneur of Great Britain” for 2007 by the Start Your Business Magazine – a magazine for business and economics.

This year the regional NovaTech competition will take place on October 5th,  in Budapest, Hungary. More than 17 teams will compete on the regional round, 3 of which are Bulgarian. Mr. George Brashnarov, Chairman of BASSCOM, will be again part of the jury. On a local level, the event is supported by the Hungarian Association of IT Companies (IVSZ) and the Youth Ministry for Information and Communication, Hungary.

Adoption of the Written Declaration on ACTA by the European Parliament: a victory for ICT SMEs

After months of raising awareness on the risks of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, the threshold of the 369 signatures of MEPs has been reached, and the written declaration n°12 on ACTA has officially been adopted by the European Parliament.

Though not legally binding, this declaration is a very clear and strong political message against legal uncertainty for internet intermediaries. Even if the European Commission ratifies ACTA during the Tokyo round foreseen at the end of this month, the text will not be binding for EU member states unless the Parliament approves it. The adoption of this declaration shows that the Parliament might not approve it, especially if the text still includes undue liability of Internet services providers and other issues identified in the declaration.

PIN-SME alongside other industry representatives has been very active in contacting MEPs at European and national level on the dangers of ACTA and warmly welcomes the adoption of the declaration. “The adoption of the written declaration on ACTA by the European Parliament is a significant victory”, PIN-SME President Bruno Robine said in a statement. “The openness of the Internet and the legal certainty of ICT SMEs as services providers cannot be jeopardized without causing severe distortions of competition and disrupting innovation; we warmly thank the European Parliament for sending this message out loud and clear.”

About PIN-SME
Launched in December 2007 by national sectoral SME federations and ICT clusters in eight EU countries (Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Austria and Spain), PIN-SME is the first European association exclusively focused on representing the interests of the SME community in the ICT sector. It directly represents around 50,000 European SMEs in the ICT sector. Additional information can be found at:
