The competition encourages innovation through local entrepreneurs, alumni and students networks. NOVATech is a competition for Central and Eastern Europe, part of the worldwide Intel Berkeley Technology Entrepreneurship Challenge (IBTEC), sponsored by Intel and Berkeley University of California. It provides investors and venture capitalists an opportunity to meet entrepreneurs and give them the chance to work together to turn innovative ideas into successful businesses in the technology field.
For fifth year in a row, the national and regional competition will be carried out by the Bulgarian Institute for Management and Technology (BIMT) and will be supported by BASSCOM and Gramma Net IS. The goal of the competition is to encourage technology innovative ideas of students, teachers and entrepreneurs. This year, the regional NovaTech competition will take place in Hungary October 2010. The Bulgarian round of the event will be on September 8th, 2010 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The participants will present projects for innovative technology in the following categories: semiconductors, hardware, mobile and wireless, digital electronics, retail consumer software, enterprise software and IT energy and power generation, nanotechnologies and biotechnologies. The projects will be presented with a business plan and will be evaluated by a jury of international and regional experts from the academia and business sector. The organizers try to provoke innovative thinking at the universities as well as among business and technology leaders, and to facilitate students’ contacts with technology investors.
Participating countries at the event in Budapest, Hungary, are Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Hungary, Poland, Turkey, Slovakia and Israel. The first prize is USD 20 000 and the second prize is USD 10 000. The winners in the regional competition will be given the opportunity to present their innovative ideas at the World Finals in Berkeley, California, on November, 2010.
Prior to the competition day, the organisers will host a matchmaking evening, designed to facilitate the contacts between technology investors, venture capitalists such as Intel Capital and NEVEQ, ICT clusters and networks in the regions and students and alumnis with innovative business ideas.
We firmly believe that this event will be interesting for the companies in the ICT industry and the NOVATech competition will strongly contribute to the ICT sector development in the region and to setting its brand new ways of development.

On 16 May 2010 in the Ceremonial hall of Sofia University “St. Kl. Ohridski” took place Idea Challenge Day – the final of the competition for innovative business ideas Idea Challenge which was organized by the entrepreneurship club Start It Smart. The purpose of the event was to gather young people who want to change the surrounding world and to help them realize their innovative ideas. During the event the best 15th business ideas were presented. The jury chose 5 of them which won the big prize. BASSCOM was a partner of the competition.

On 11th May, 2010 the Association set the start of the first of a series BASSCOM Soft Breakfasts under the topic “Bulgaria: the Partner near you. IT Cooperation & Business Opportunities”.

Representatives of some of the foreign embassies in Bulgaria (Canada, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Norway, Republic of Korea, Republic of South Africa, Romania, Spain, Syria, U.K., US) as well as BASSCOM member companies took part in the event.
The purpose of the BASSCOM Soft Breakfast was to acquaint the diplomatic community with the potential of the Bulgarian software industry and to create a platform for future cooperation with companies from the EU and international markets, and the establishment and development of IT business networks.
The chairman of BASSCOM – Mr. George Brashnarov and Mr. George Sharkov, a Board Member of the Association, welcomed the participants with short speeches. The business breakfast was the first platform from which the initial results of the second edition of the Bulgarian Industry Barometer Survey were presented. The presentation was made by Mr. Georgi Zahariev, a Board Member of BASSCOM.

An honored guest on the event was Ms. Sasha Bezuhanova, a Chairwoman of ICT and E-Government Committee within the Confederation of Employers and Industrialists in Bulgaria. She expressed the common opinion that the development of the IT sector is of great importance for the Bulgarian economy as a whole.

BASSCOM became a partner of Idea Challenge – a competition for innovative business ideas under the topic “How could I change the world?”.
University students with desire and potential who want to be part of the solution but not of the problem could present their ideas for consistent business that has a positive influence on the surrounding environment – technologies, university, community, local environment.
There is no requirement for the ideas to be unique or phenomenal because the winners will be those that have developed their concept the best. Moreover, the prize worth the effort – it is a combination of mentors, contacts, knowledge, know-how and money.
The initiative is organized by Start It Smart- an entrepreneurship club in Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. Its mission is to support young people with innovative way of thinking from all universities to express their ideas and develop their vision for the world. The aim of the club is to build a bridge between tomorrow successful companies, universities and Bulgarian business organization with progressive thinking.

 We are glad to announce that BASSCOM has become a partner of WEBLOZ’10- National web design and programming competition for students from secondary schools.
The competition is the most successful and fast developed event for students in the country till this moment. The main aim of the event is to place the participants in a competitive environment, stimulate their development and provide them with the freedom to work out their own product with technologies by their personal judgement.
WEBLOZ has two categories – “Web design” and “Internet programming”. The submitted projects can be developed by teams that consist of 2 students at the most. The competition is organized for 4th year in a row. For this period more than 100 teams took part in the event and prizes for more 11000 levs are distributed.

Over the last weekend of November (27-29.11.2009) BASSCOM organized its second annual meeting with the CEOs of its member companies. Chiflik Village was the venue of the event in the picturesque Stara Planina Mountain.
The event was attended by 28 participants from 24 organizations. Among them there were representatives from two new companies interested in joining the family of the Association. The items on the agenda were strategical development of BASSCOM; BASSCOM national event 2010 and international events participation; IT Industry Barometer Survey conducted by BASSCOM, etc. The new schemes under OP Competitiveness and information about BASSCOM projects were also announced.

BASSCOM took part in the ICT exhibition CeBIT Bilisim from 7 to 11 October in Istanbul, Turkey, presenting the Bulgarian Software Industry and opportunities for cooperation with Bulgarian software companies. The Bulgarian stand was represented by two Bulgarian software companies as well - Bianor and Nemetschek Bulgaria.
CeBIT Bilisim Eurasia opened its doors for 10th year in a row, being part of the international chain of fair Deutsche Messe. The fair is the most important trade show for the ICT sector in the whole of Eurasia and forms an international hub for the burgeoning ICT markets of Turkey, southeast Europe and the Black Sea region.
The CeBIT Bilişim Eurasia fair was visited by 143,000 people, according to Orkunt Yozgat, the fair director. “A total of 989 companies attended the fair. As planned, the focus of the event was on solutions and activities aimed at businesses," Yozgat said.

On 10-13 May 2009 an international forum on the topic “The role of professional branch associations in fostering the competitiveness of SMEs in the IT sector – creating a common SEE IT brand” took place in Hilton hotel, Sofia. The event was organized by The Bulgarian Association of software companies (BASSCOM) under a project co-financed by the Central European Initiative (CEI) through the CEI Know-how Exchange Programme. Co-organizer of the event was the Austrian Professional Association of Management Consultancy and Information Technology (UBIT), PIN-SME (The Pan European ICT & eBusiness Network for SMEs) and P&D Consulting.

The purpose of this workshop was to provide information and exchange of experiences on the significant role of the modern Branch Associations in the public live and for promotion of contemporary IT products and services to other industries. Representative organizations from regional countries such as Albania, Croatia, Macedonia, Romania, Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine took part in the event.

The program was structured in parallel and networking sessions and also included study visits and discussions with the participating Branch organizations on: models of organization and management, main priorities, current strategies and programs, common projects with government and other organizations, EU funded projects; state policy in ICT sector, Public-private partnership (PPP) initiatives and projects; promotion of the competitiveness of SMEs trough education - strong communications between Branch Associations, Academia and Universities for creation a competent, skilled and aspiring generation of IT professionals, etc.

BASSCOM has the pleasure to invite you to take part in Systems 2006 as exhibitor at the common stand and contribute to successful presentation of the Bulgarian software industry on this event.
As it already became a tradition BASSCOM will organize the participation of software companies at Systems this year – the B2B trade fair for IT, media and communications. The event will be held from 23 to 27 October 2006 in Munich. Apart from the meetings between the present and potential partners a number of seminars, lectures on current issues in the ICT industry, specialized business forums on software application systems and services will take place.
The Bulgarian booth of 60 sq.m will be located in Hall 2, stand No. 421 under the heading “Talent, Innovations, Quality”. The stand will include a common space for individual meetings, information area for advertising and information materials, banners with company name for each participating company and national identification sign. The participation fee is 1000 leva and includes: participation at the Bulgarian booth, entry in the catalogue and all additional information and presentation materials, and organization of individual meetings with potential partners. The companies cover their travel and accommodation expenses by their own.
Among the planed events during the fair BASSCOM will host at the booth a special Bulgarian day - “Software and SoftWane” and will present the Bulgarian software industry at the International Innovation Forum and the Mobile Summit - events part of the official program of the fair.
The Bulgarian participation is kindly supported by the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ), USAID through its VEGA/BTD Program and the Swiss Import Promotion Programme (SIPPO).
The registration deadline is September 8, 2006.
